Quick estimate

Is your floor worth saving?

Most of the time, yes. A dull, scratched floor rarely needs to be torn out. The wood underneath is usually in good shape and just needs to be sanded and finished again.

What we do

One trade, done right: bringing hardwood back

Living room hardwood floor after sanding and refinishing

Sanding & Refinishing

Old finish, scratches and gray wear come off. We sand down to clean wood and put on a new finish built for everyday life.

Stain Colors

Want a darker or warmer tone? After sanding, we can stain your floor a new color before the finish goes on.

Stair Refinishing

Stairs take more traffic than any room in the house. Every tread sanded edge to edge and finished to hold up.

Water-Based Finishes

How a refinish works

  1. Freshly refinished hardwood living room with a VGJ crew member at work

    We look at the floor

Text us a few photos or we come see it in person. Estimate visits run from 7 am to 6 pm, and you get a clear price for the job.

  2. Drum floor sander on a hardwood floor sanded down to bare wood

    Sanding down to clean wood

The old finish, scratches and gray wear come off. We sand until the floor is bare, even and ready for a new finish.

  3. Hardwood floor with wood filler spread over gaps and nail holes before final sanding

    Filling and prep

Gaps, nail holes and small dents get filled, then the floor is sanded smooth again so the finish goes on clean.

  4. Dark stain being applied over freshly sanded hardwood, half the room done

Stain, if you want a new color

Keep the natural tone of the wood or pick a darker, warmer color. The stain goes on before any finish.

  5. VGJ crew member rolling a water-based finish across a sanded hardwood floor

    Finish, coat by coat

Water-based finish goes on edge to edge, coat by coat. We use quality products like Bona Traffic, made for heavy foot traffic.

FAQ

Questions homeowners ask us

Should I refinish or replace my hardwood floors?

If your floor is solid hardwood and the boards are still sound, refinishing usually makes more sense than replacing. We sand off the worn finish, scratches and gray wear and put a new finish on the same wood. Send us photos or have us look in person and we will tell you honestly what your floor needs.

Can you change the color of my floors?

Yes. After sanding, we can stain the floor a new color before the finish goes on, or keep the natural tone of the wood. We go over the options with you at the estimate.

What kind of finish do you use?

We use water-based finishes, including Bona Traffic, a finish made for heavy foot traffic. Quality above all: we never cut corners on products to lower the price.

Do you refinish stairs too?

Yes. We sand and refinish stair treads and landings, on their own or together with your floors, natural or stained.

How do I get an estimate?

Call or text (732) 768-0854, or fill out the form on this page. Texting a few photos of the floor helps. Estimate visits run from 7 am to 6 pm.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. VGJ Floors Covering LLC is licensed and insured in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, with general liability and workers' compensation coverage.

What areas do you serve?

We are based in Long Branch and work across most of New Jersey, including Monmouth, Ocean and Mercer counties, and in Pennsylvania outside the city of Philadelphia. Not sure about your town? Text us.
