Signs your floor is ready for a refinish

  • Gray or worn paths where people walk the most
  • Scratches and marks that go through the finish
  • A finish that does not shine anymore, even after cleaning
  • A color you are tired of looking at
  • An old coating or paint over the wood

If the boards are solid and sound, refinishing gives you back the same floor, with the look of new, without tearing anything out.

    Sanding down to clean wood

The old finish, scratches and gray wear come off. We sand until the floor is bare, even and ready for a new finish.

  3. Hardwood floor with wood filler spread over gaps and nail holes before final sanding

    Filling and prep

Gaps, nail holes and small dents get filled, then the floor is sanded smooth again so the finish goes on clean.

  4. Dark stain being applied over freshly sanded hardwood, half the room done

Stain, if you want a new color

Keep the natural tone of the wood or pick a darker, warmer color. The stain goes on before any finish.

  5. VGJ crew member rolling a water-based finish across a sanded hardwood floor

    Finish, coat by coat

Water-based finish goes on edge to edge, coat by coat. We use quality products like Bona Traffic, made for heavy foot traffic.

Color and finish

Natural, stained, and finished to last

Once the floor is sanded, you choose the look. We go over the options with you at the estimate.

Natural tone

Keep the wood's own color. The finish brings out the grain and the character of every board.

A new stain color

Go darker or warmer. The stain goes on after sanding and before the finish, so the color is even across the room.

FAQ

Refinishing questions

Can every hardwood floor be refinished?

Solid hardwood can usually be sanded and refinished more than once. Engineered floors depend on how thick the top wood layer is. We check that at the estimate visit before recommending anything.

Can you remove paint or an old coating?

In many cases, yes. Sanding takes off old finishes and coatings down to bare wood. We look at the floor first and tell you what to expect.

Can I change the color of my floor?

Yes. After sanding we can stain the floor a new color, or keep the natural tone of the wood. The stain goes on before the finish.

What finish do you use?

Water-based finishes, including Bona Traffic, a finish made for heavy foot traffic.

Do you refinish stairs at the same time?

Yes. We can do your floors and stairs in the same job.

How do I get a price?
